Annales de l'Institut Fourier, Tome 53 (2003) no. 7, pp. 2155-2224.

In this text we introduce a notion of height for subschemes of an arithmetic variety. In the particular case of a subscheme of (generic) dimension zero in a projective space, we give estimates for these heights which take the form of an arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel formula. This generalizes results of M. Laurent on heights of interpolation matrices. The first three terms of the asymptotic development thus obtained can be analyzed as follows: the first is linear, with coefficient given by the height of the cycle associated to the subscheme; the second is logarithmic and depends on the lengths of the jets of the subscheme along its points at infinity; finally the third is a constant depending on the ramification of the subscheme and on the height of its tangent cone. In the last section of this article, we study the error term of this formula, at least when the subscheme is reduced. We show that it decomposes as a sum of local contributions which decrease in absolute value. This result admits a nice interpretation in terms of hermitian geometry and of cohomology.
