La proportionnalité numérique dans le livre VII des Éléments de Campanus

La version des Éléments d'Euclide de Campanus (xiiie siècle) n'est pas une traduction mais une recension faite à partir de versions arabo-latines du xiiie siècle et d'ouvrages originaux comme l'Arithmétique de Jordanus. L'étude de la théorie de la proportionnalité numérique du Livre VII montre la nature et l'ampleur du travail de Campanus sur le traité euclidien tel qu'il lui a été transmis. Nous verrons que ses réflexions s'inscrivent dans le projet euclidien lui-même qu'il cherche à expliciter et à renforcer, s'attachant tout particulièrement à la structure logique du traité. Pour cela, il dégage les notions fondamentales de cette théorie que sont les notions de « partie » et « parties » et introduit la notion médiévale de « dénomination d'un rapport numérique ».

Campanus' 13th-century version of Euclid's Elements is not a translation but a comment written on the basis of Arabic and Latin 12th-century sources and original works such as Jordanus' Arithmetic. The study of numerical proportionality in Book VII shows the nature and scope of Campanus' work on Euclid's treatise as it was transmitted to him. We shall see that Campanus' reflexions are inscribed in the euclidean project itself, which, mostly concerned with the logical structure of the treatise, he sought to explain and strengthen. In this perspective, he distinguished fundamental notions in this theory, such as “part” and “parts”, and introduced the medieval notion of “denomination of a numerical ratio”.
